# Recognition of Indigenous Craftsmanship: GI Tag Granted to Ryndia Silk & Khasi Handloom

Ryndia Silk and Khasi Handloom from Meghalaya have recently been granted the Geographical Indication (GI) Tag by the Government of India.

This landmark recognition follows a sustained four-year effort led by the Department of Textiles, Government of Meghalaya, with support from the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) and technical guidance from Dr. Rajnikanth.

**Ryndia Silk** is a handspun, handwoven textile made from Eri silk, renowned for its eco-friendly, cruelty-free production and deep cultural significance within the Khasi community. Similarly, *Khasi Handloom* represents the traditional weaving practices and heritage of the region.

From an intellectual property perspective, the GI tag is a critical legal tool that:

- Protects the authenticity and reputation of traditional products;
- Grants exclusive rights to local producers and artisans;
- Promotes sustainable economic development through enhanced market access.

This recognition underscores the importance of IP in preserving traditional knowledge and empowering artisan communities through formal legal protection.
