Aditya Bhattachrya was recently featured in *Moneycontrol*, where he addressed a common misconception surrounding **Form 16** and Income Tax Return (ITR) filing.

## Why Zero TDS in Form 16 Does Not Mean No ITR Filing

Commenting on the issue, Aditya explained that taxpayers should not assume that a Form 16 reflecting **no tax deducted at source (TDS)** or no tax payable automatically means that filing an ITR is unnecessary.

He emphasized that Form 16 is only a record of the salary paid by an employer and the tax deducted, if any, and does not provide a complete picture of an individual’s financial affairs.

## Why Filing an ITR May Still Be Essential

He further noted that the **obligation to file an ITR** is determined by the provisions of the Income-tax Act and an individual’s overall income and financial transactions during the relevant financial year.

Filing an ITR may also be essential for the following reasons:

- Claiming **tax refunds**
- Carrying forward eligible losses
- Meeting statutory compliance requirements

## Key Takeaway for Taxpayers

Aditya’s comments serve as a timely reminder for taxpayers to **assess their overall tax position** rather than relying solely on Form 16 when determining their ITR filing obligations.
