The Ministry of electronics and information technology (“MeitY”)[1] on 2nd January 2023 released the draft amendments to IT (intermediary guidelines and digital media ethics) rules 2021 for public consultations. The release comes after a week when MeitY was appointed as a nodal ministry.

MeitY has adopted a self-regulatory mechanism and majorly focuses to ensure that online games shall operate as per Indian laws and that children shall be protected from any such potential harm as well as the users shall be protected from financial fraud and addiction to gaming.

The ministry has put utmost stress on making online gaming platforms a no-go area used for betting and wagering. The Online gaming sector is growing vastly and is predicted to contribute to India’s GDP in the future year. Therefore, regulating such an industry was of utmost importance.

The draft amendments to IT rules 2021 shall not only contribute to the growth of online gaming in India but would provide users with a safe and protected gaming platform.
