In a recent Business Standard article, Aditya Bhattachrya highlighted the strict compliance requirements around online gaming income. Platforms like Dream11 and other operators are now obligated under the Income-tax Act to deduct 30% TDS on net winnings either at the time of withdrawal or at the end of the financial year—whichever comes earlier—and report the deduction against the user’s PAN.

With the Online Gaming Bill tightening regulations, platforms must ensure transparent reporting, while users are required to disclose such income separately under “Income from Other Sources” or “Business Income”, depending on the scale and regularity. Non-compliance could result in penalties as high as 200%.
