EPFO Establishes Task Force and IBC Cell to Recover ₹21,000 Crore in Pending PF Dues: Aditya Bhattacharya Comments

In a significant policy development, the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has constituted a task force and an IBC cell to expedite the recovery of over ₹21,000 crore in pending provident fund (PF) dues.

The task force’s primary role is to identify and act on high-value cases those involving dues exceeding ₹1 crore, and to recommend suitable recovery mechanisms. This initiative aims to enhance accountability among employers and strengthen enforcement in cases of large PF defaults.
Commenting on the development in a Moneycontrol.com article, Aditya Bhattacharya noted: “Recovery can be made through attachment and sale of the employer’s assets, garnishee orders, or by filing claims before the resolution professional or liquidator in insolvency cases.”
He further emphasized that the creation of the task force and IBC cell marks a proactive step toward improving coordination and ensuring efficient recovery from defaulting entities, particularly those undergoing insolvency or liquidation proceedings under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC), 2016.
While the task force itself does not hold adjudicatory powers, it is expected to streamline recovery efforts, facilitate consistent follow-ups, and accelerate enforcement, thereby strengthening the integrity of India’s social security framework.
