Aditya Bhattachrya Advises Taxpayers Not to Rely on Speculation Around ITR Filing Deadline Extension

Aditya Bhattachrya urged taxpayers to complete their Income Tax Return (ITR) filings within the prescribed timeline, noting that there is currently no official indication of any extension to the filing deadline for non-audit taxpayers.
Commenting in a recent Moneycontrol article on the approaching ITR filing deadline, Aditya observed that taxpayers should base their compliance decisions on official announcements rather than market speculation.
According to Aditya, “At this stage, there is no official indication from the CBDT that the ITR filing due date for non-audit taxpayers will be extended beyond 31 July 2026. While last year’s extension was driven by significant changes to the ITR forms and system readiness, the compliance ecosystem has been considerably more stable this year, with forms and filing utilities made available much earlier. Taxpayers should therefore avoid relying on speculation around a possible extension and complete their filings within the prescribed timeline.”

Aditya explained that, unlike the previous assessment year, when procedural changes and system preparedness warranted an extension of the filing deadline, the current filing season has witnessed greater operational readiness. The early release of ITR forms and filing utilities has enabled taxpayers to comply well in advance of the due date, reducing the likelihood of administrative delays.
His comments highlight the importance of timely tax compliance and reinforce that assumptions regarding possible extensions can expose taxpayers to unnecessary risks, including late filing consequences where no extension is ultimately granted.
Aditya’s observations serve as a timely reminder for taxpayers to complete the filing process, verify the accuracy of disclosures, and ensure all necessary documentation is in place before the statutory deadline.
