Legal Experts Comment on New US Immigration Bill Impacting Undocumented Individuals

In response to the recent passage of the Laken Riley Act by the US House of Representatives, Jidesh Kumar and Zeeshan Farooqui have shared insights on the law’s implications for undocumented immigrants, including its potential impact on Indian nationals residing in the United States without proper documentation in a recent Business Standard article.

“The Laken Riley Act, recently passed by the US House of Representatives, makes it mandatory to detain undocumented immigrants arrested for certain non-violent crimes like theft, burglary, or shoplifting,” said Jidesh Kumar, he highlighted that this legislation applies universally, including to Indian nationals who may lack proper legal status in the US.

Speaking on the broader challenges faced by Indians navigating the US immigration system, Zeeshan Farooqui, added, “Many Indians face restrictions and long delays in obtaining visas or green cards. This drives some to explore alternative routes, often at great financial and personal risk.”
