During the panel discussion, Sunayana shared profound insights on the ethical implementation of emerging technologies and the evolving regulatory landscape. She introduced the concept of “Rights and Regulation – the Two Rs”, emphasizing how the right to internet access is increasingly being viewed as integral to fundamental rights, such as the Right to Life and Freedom of Trade. She highlighted the dynamic shift in private entities performing public functions and the need to include internet access within constitutional frameworks.

Speaking on regulation, Sunayana drew parallels between the evolution of privacy laws and the regulation of financial markets. She discussed the impact of the GDPR and its influence on India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2024, noting how India has tailored these principles to its unique needs. “The removal of data localization requirements in many sectors demonstrates India’s nuanced approach to global regulatory practices,” she remarked.

In her concluding remarks, Sunayana provided valuable advice to business leaders and entrepreneurs, encouraging them to integrate regulatory standards into product design from the outset. She further urged companies to involve legal professionals early in their journey, stating:

“Businesses often consult lawyers only when disputes arise. It’s time to shift this perspective. Think of lawyers as your friends in the boardroom, offering strategic guidance from ideation to execution.”

Sunayana’s participation at the conference underscores her commitment to bridging the gap between technology, ethics, and regulation, while reinforcing the role of legal expertise in driving sustainable innovation.
