Vipin Upadhyay Welcomes Tax Relief for Landowners under Budget 2026 in Business Standard

In a recent article titled “Budget 2026: Tax relief for landowners affected by compulsory acquisition” published by Business Standard, Vipin Upadhyay, shared his perspective on the taxation reforms concerning compulsory land acquisition under Union Budget 2026.

Commenting on the amendment, Vipin stated:
“The Budget 2026 has taken a decisive step in providing clarity and relief on taxation arising from compulsory land acquisition under the RFCTLARR Act, 2013. By exempting income received by an individual or Hindu Undivided Family from any award or agreement (except under Section 46), the Government acknowledges the need to shield affected landowners from additional tax burdens during such acquisitions.”
He noted that the clarification brings much-needed certainty to landowners impacted by acquisitions under the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013 (RFCTLARR Act, 2013). The exemption seeks to ensure that compensation awarded in cases of compulsory acquisition is not eroded by additional tax liabilities, particularly for individuals and Hindu Undivided Families.
The measure reflects the Government’s broader policy intent to balance infrastructure development objectives with equitable treatment of affected landowners, reinforcing fairness and transparency in the acquisition process.
